Frequently Asked Questions

Tax legislation can be difficult to understand and interpret as it is continually updated and amended.  Automatic penalties are applied for errors and for late submission.

We get asked many questions and these are some of the most common. But if anything bothers you about your tax situation then please ask.

Why do I need you to complete my Tax Return?

You don't. But to make sure you're not paying too much tax and that you are maximising your savings requires knowledge and experience. That's what we have, the knowledge to minimise your tax liability.

What is the deadline for submitting my tax return?

The deadline for all tax returns is 31st January following the tax year it relates to.

What if I am late filing my tax return?

If you are late the HM Revenue & Customs impose an automatic £100 fine. Penalties for late submission & interest start to accrue from 1st February on the tax not yet paid. If the return is up to 3 months late the penalty is £10 per day - up to 90 days, to a maximum of £900. There will be a further £300 fine or 5% of the outstanding tax, whichever is higher, after 6 months and a further penalty at 12 months.

What happens if I can't pay my tax by the deadline?

The Inland Revenue will charge you interest for the tax paid late. You will also have to pay a surcharge of 5% of the unpaid tax if it is still not paid by 28th February. A further 5% will be charged if the tax is still unpaid after 6 months. A further 5% penalty will be charged if the tax remains unpaid at 12 months.

I'm due a tax refund, when will I get this?

The Inland Revenue will issue your refund as soon as they have processed the Return.
