Top German football boss Uli Hoeness jailed for tax fraud

President of Bayern Munich Uli Hoeness has dropped his appeal against tax fraud and started a three and a half year jail sentence with immediate effect.

The 62 year old former football boss admitted to evading at least $28.5m in taxes.  In a statement he said;

“After discussions with my family, I have decided to accept the judgment of the District Court of Munich in my tax case.  I have instructed my lawyers not to make an appeal.

This reflects my understanding of decency, attitude and personal responsibility.  Tax evasion was the mistake of my life.  I will bear the consequences of this error.”

Hoeness said he would resign with immediate effect as Bayern Munich’s president and as a member of the club’s supervisory board to ‘avoid damaging the club’.  He also added;

“FC Bayern Munich is my life’s work and it will always be there.  I’m going to stay with this great club and the people connected to it, in every other way as long as I live.”
