Lawyers join calls to scrap tax powers

The Law Society has joined calls by accountants and building societies for HMRC to scrap plans to seize money directly from individual’s bank accounts.

Branding the proposals ‘draconian and aggressive’ spokesman Gary Richards said HMRC had not demonstrated any need for additional powers but would press on regardless;

“We agree that tax that is due must be paid, but HMRC’s existing powers are sufficient if used properly.  There are already streamlined procedures for recovery of tax due in UK courts.”

He also added that the society was concerned direct recovery from bank accounts without judicial supervision could cause a breach of data protection or human rights legislation.

Chas Roy-Chowdury of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants urged the Treasury to take notice of the plans;

“They need to re-think the whole proposal which we think is defective.  The impression we are getting is that they will go ahead anyway.”
