HMRC Chief Executive has resigned due to ill-health

Dame Lesley Straithe has resigned as HMRC chief executive due to ill-health.  She has been on sick leave for several months.  The offical announcement of her departure revealed that she was diagnosed with cancer in July this year.  she had intended to return to work in the autumn, but as her health deteriorated, she has decided to step down as chief executive to focus on her treatment.

Lately she has also held a cross-departmental role as head of profession for operational delivery.  In a time of on-going cost savings, job cuts and technology embarrassments have been daunting.  With numerous firestorms identifying the departments failures, Dame Lesley struggled to convince MP's of her departments ability to cope with staff cuts and IT project management.

She has built a strong leadership team who are well placed to lead HMRC and support a new chief executive.  HMRC chairman Mike Clasper will remain in place and continue to led the department, as he has done over her summer leave.  Tax secretary Dave Hartnett will act as interim principle accounting officer until a new chief executive is appointed.
