Travel savings to make your money go further

The summer holidays may be a distant memory, but it’s never too early to start thinking about your next getaway.  If you’ve ever thought you could be getting a better deal on your holiday, have a look at our money saving tips to help your travel budget take you further.

Go online for stretch your budget

The best offers can usually be found online as companies do not have to add the cost of sales teams or high street premises to the cost of your holiday.  Whether you book your flights and accommodation separately or want a package or all inclusive option, the best value for money is usually on the net.  You may have to spend time doing your research but it will give you peace of mind that you are getting good value for money.  It also pays to use more than one search engine and different travel comparison sites such as travelsupermarket, expedia, cheapflights, laterooms, eBookers and

Get the best insurance deal

If you buy a package holiday you may be offered travel insurance as part of the deal.  Although it might be tempting to buy there and then, you will probably save money if you shop around and check out other deals online.  Sites such as can give you quick quotes from some of the major insurers to get you started.

If you're a frequent traveler it might also be worth considering an Annual or multi-trip policy.  The cover may be up to two and a half times the amount of a single trip, but if you are making three or more trips a year, you will save money overall.  If you are on a budget you can vary the amount of cover you require and the amount of excess you are willing to pay in order to get the lowest premium.

Park at the airport for less

Airport parking can be sky high for those who just turn up on the day of their flight.  You will usually get a much better rate if you pre-book in advance.  You can either go direct to the individual airport or try comparison sites such as or also offer extra discount of 13% for a small booking fee.

Swap houses to save money

House swaps with another family could mean that your accommodation costs are taken care of.  You can either arrange it informally through friends, or register with an agency who will usually charge a membership fee of less than £100 per year (refundable if you do not manage to arrange a swap within the year).  Sites such as and HomeforExchange will ask you to register your home details and the dates you want.  You can even request the use of the other family’s car to save you having to hire one when you arrive.

Group bookings can be cheaper

Renting a large villa or holiday home with friends and family can give you extra perks such as a private pool and garden that you might not be able to afford by yourself.  Providing you can manage to put up with the extra guests (!) you could all get a holiday for a bargain price. or are good places to start.

Travel overnight

Airlines and ferries generally have more competitive fares late at night and early in the morning as these slots are less popular.

Book early

Booking a few months in advance will usually save you money on your transport and accommodation.  However if you can only book close to your date of travel, the later you book, the better the deal as holiday companies drop their prices significantly rather than have empty rooms.

Get cheap foreign currency

It pays to compare the exchange rate at several outlets before you make your transaction since firms that offer ‘commission free’ exchanges may cost you more overall if the exchange rate is higher.  Rates at the airport will also be amongst the highest so it pays you to get your cash before you set off.

For convenience you may want to consider Travelex who will allow you to order currency online and then pick it up from any of their bureaux de change.  They will also refund you the difference if you can find a better rate elsewhere.
